What is the story about?
The Haryana Cabinet has approved a 100% exemption from motor vehicle tax on the registration of new battery-operated two-wheelers, three-wheelers, including autos and e-rickshaws, and four-wheelers with an ex-showroom price of up to ₹30 lakh.
Electric vehicles priced above ₹30 lakh will receive a 50% exemption on motor vehicle tax at the time of registration.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and fulfils an assurance made in the state's 2026–27 Budget.
The new policy replaces the existing 20% rebate available on the registration of electric vehicles. However, the current 20% rebate on the registration of CNG vehicles will continue unchanged, irrespective of their price.
The government said, "Cabinet has approved a 100% exemption from Motor Vehicle Tax on the new registration of pure electric or battery-operated two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and three-wheelers (autos/e-rickshaws) with an ex-showroom price of up to Rs 30 lakh."
It added, "In addition, vehicles costing above Rs 30 lakh will be eligible for a 50 per cent tax exemption."
Why it matters
The move is expected to reduce the upfront cost of buying electric vehicles and encourage their adoption in the state. It could also help Haryana retain vehicle registrations that were shifting to neighbouring Delhi and Chandigarh, where buyers could avail lower registration charges on eligible electric vehicles.
Women buyers benefit
The Cabinet also approved a 1% rebate in motor vehicle tax for non-transport vehicles costing up to ₹20 lakh when purchased and registered in the name of women.
Separately, the motor vehicle tax on four-wheelers costing up to ₹6 lakh will be reduced from 5% to 4% if the vehicle is purchased and registered in a woman's name.
The government said the measure is aimed at encouraging vehicle ownership among women and promoting greater financial participation.
