What is the story about?
Global NCAP recently published crash test results for the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Celerio under its Safer Cars for India programme. The outcomes show improvements for the Celerio with updated safety equipment, while the Ciaz continues to score poorly in key safety areas.
Richard Woods, Chief Executive Officer of Global NCAP, said, “We are encouraged that Maruti Suzuki is committed to improving safety with five star performance for new models like the Dzire and Victoris, it remains disappointing however that some legacy models fall short.”
Maruti Suzuki Celerio Crash Test Results
Global NCAP tested the Maruti Suzuki Celerio with six airbags fitted as standard. The hatchback earned a three-star rating for adult occupant protection and a two-star rating for child occupant protection.
In the adult occupant protection tests, the Celerio scored 18.04 out of 34 points. Protection levels varied from good to marginal across different impact areas. The bodyshell and footwell structures were rated as unstable. In side impact tests, some protection measurements were marginal. Electronic stability control (ESC), six airbags, and three-point seatbelts for all seating positions were factors in the three-star outcome.
For child occupant protection, the Celerio scored 18.57 out of 49 points, resulting in a two-star rating. Child restraint performance showed repeated head exposure in both frontal and side impact tests. The front airbag cannot be disabled when a child seat is installed. However, the presence of three-point seatbelts and child restraint installation fixtures in all seats contributed to achieving two stars.
A previous version of the Celerio with only two airbags had scored two stars for adult protection and one star for child protection. That result prompted Maruti Suzuki to commit to fitting six airbags as standard in later models.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Crash Test Results
The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz sedan received a one-star rating for overall safety. It scored 20.86 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection and 28.57 out of 49 points for child occupant protection.
In adult occupant protection tests, head and neck protection were rated good. However, side head protection was absent, and chest protection was weak in side impact tests. Both the bodyshell and footwell were judged unstable. The Ciaz also lacks three-point seatbelts in all seating positions.
For child occupant protection, the Ciaz scored 28.57 points. Global NCAP noted repeated head exposure in child crash tests. The tests showed that child restraint systems did not fully prevent head exposure. The Ciaz’s safety equipment includes ESC and seatbelt reminders, which contributed to the rating.
