Buying Used Cars in Delhi, Mumbai & Bangalore: Prices, Checks & Where to Look

March 2026·Glance Auto Desk

A 2020 Hyundai Creta costs Rs. 7–8 lakh in Delhi but Rs. 8.5–10 lakh in Mumbai. Registration rules, road tax, and pollution norms vary by city. Here's everything you need to know about buying used cars in India's three biggest markets.

Used car prices in India aren't uniform. The same car can cost Rs. 1–2 lakh more (or less) depending on the city — because of supply, demand, road tax, and registration rules.

City-Wise Price Comparison (2026 Estimates)

Delhi is generally the cheapest due to higher supply (largest car market) and the 15-year diesel/10-year petrol rule that pushes older cars out of NCR faster.

City-Specific Rules to Know

Delhi / NCR

  • Diesel cars over 10 years and petrol cars over 15 years cannot be driven in NCR (Supreme Court order)
  • This floods the market with 7–9 year old cars at steep discounts
  • Re-registration in other states is possible but adds cost and paperwork
  • Best hunting ground: Karol Bagh, Mayapuri used car markets, Cars24 hubs

Mumbai

  • Highest road tax in India — 11–13% of car value (compared to 4–8% in other states)
  • Used car prices are higher because of this tax burden
  • Insurance costs are higher due to flood risk (Mumbai rains)
  • Best hunting ground: Mahindra First Choice outlets, Spinny Mumbai, Andheri/Jogeshwari used car lanes

Bangalore

  • Moderate road tax (13% for new, but used car transfer is 4–5% of depreciated value)
  • Growing tech population means high demand for mid-range cars (Creta, City, Nexon)
  • Best hunting ground: Whitefield used car hub, Cars24 Bangalore, Spinny

Transferring Registration Between States

If you buy a car registered in Delhi and want to use it in Mumbai:

StepWhat to DoCost
1Get NOC from the original state RTORs. 500–1,500
2Pay road tax in the new state4–13% of car's current value
3Re-register at new state RTORs. 1,000–3,000
4Get new registration platesRs. 500–1,000
TotalRs. 5,000–50,000+ depending on state and car value
Factor in the transfer cost when comparing inter-state prices. A car that's Rs. 1 lakh cheaper in Delhi may cost Rs. 50,000 to re-register in Karnataka — making the savings only Rs. 50,000.
