This policy aims to ensure that the substantial computing power required for AI development and operation resides on Indian soil. This forward-thinking approach has already garnered attention from major tech corporations like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, all of whom rely heavily on data centers. Google, for instance, has publicly committed to investing billions of dollars in AI-focused data centers across India over the next five years, signaling a strong belief in the nation's growing AI ecosystem and its potential.

While supportive government policies are vital, the practical embodiment of India's AI capabilities is showcased by Sarvam AI. This Bengaluru-based startup, established in 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, has successfully developed a comprehensive generative AI platform meticulously designed with Indian users in mind. Their primary focus lies in optimizing performance for Indic languages, understanding diverse Indian accents, and enabling on-device applications, particularly those that are voice-interactive. Sarvam AI's overarching vision is to achieve 'Sovereign AI' – a paradigm where AI models are conceived, trained using local data, and operated on indigenous infrastructure, thereby reducing dependence on foreign technological systems and fostering self-reliance in this critical field.

Sarvam AI is gaining significant recognition due to its demonstrated superiority over leading global AI models in three specific, critical domains. Its optical character recognition (OCR) tool, known as Sarvam Vision, achieved an impressive accuracy score of 84.3 percent on the olmOCR-Bench, surpassing established contenders like ChatGPT, Gemini 3 Pro, and DeepSeek OCR v2. Furthermore, the platform attained a remarkable 93.28 percent on the OmniDocBench v1.5, exhibiting exceptional proficiency in handling intricate document layouts, complex technical tables, and mathematical equations – areas where traditional OCR solutions frequently encounter difficulties. Sarvam AI's reliability has been particularly noteworthy for processing everyday scanned documents, various forms, and content that incorporates multiple languages.
Capabilities and Limitations

While it can answer queries effectively, akin to other AI platforms, it is not positioned as a complete substitute for models like ChatGPT. ChatGPT generally maintains an edge in sophisticated reasoning, coding tasks, generating lengthy explanations, and tackling complex, multi-step problem-solving scenarios. Additionally, advanced models like Gemini and GPT-4 (with vision capabilities) can process visual and auditory inputs, a feature currently beyond Sarvam AI's text-only capabilities.

Deedy Das, a former professional at Google, publicly lauded the startup, admitting initial skepticism but now recognizing Sarvam AI's leadership in text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and OCR for Indic languages.
