Parts of Bengaluru have been facing power outages for two months now, with people dealing with eight to nine hours of power cut, especially on weekends.

Since August, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL) and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) have been issuing notices for power outages in cities, citing routine servicing and infrastructure upgrades.

Reason behind frequent power outages

The officials from the Karnataka energy department have clarified that these outages are not "load shedding", but are part of a long-pending maintenance drive by KPTCL and BESCOM, TOI reported.

A KPCTL engineer said, "Given Bengaluru's rising consumption, all installations — from transformers to conductors — require periodic maintenance, at least once in three months, to handle fluctuating loads," according to TOI.

The maintenance work has long been overdue since January this year, and is now being carried out in multiple phases. As per the officials, the maintenance work was repeatedly postponed this year, citing several reasons.
