The updated test will be effective from this fall. The US immigration authority has announced the implementation of the 2025 naturalisation civics test in the Federal Register. The new test for immigrants will measure their knowledge of US history and government as required by law.

In its notice, the USCIS said that the 2025 test assesses an alien’s understanding of US history and government in line with statutory requirements and is one of the many steps in an ongoing effort to restore integrity to the naturalisation process and meet congressional intent.

The immigration department further added that naturalisation is a privilege that allows aliens (immigrants) to become fully vested members of American society, with important rights and responsibilities that all citizens should exercise and respect.

Speaking about the new test for immigrants to attain citizenship, USCIS spokesperson Matthew Tragesser said that American citizenship is the most sacred citizenship in the world and should only be reserved for aliens who will fully embrace our values and principles as a nation.

He further added that the American people can be assured that those joining them as fellow citizens are fully assimilated, and that America’s greatness can be attained only by ensuring that citizenship is granted solely to those who fully meet all the requirements including the ability to read, write, and speak English, and understand the US government.
