Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced a ban on mobile phones for students in all government and private schools across Himachal Pradesh, effective
March 1, 2026. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 69th National School Games Under-19 Girls Handball Tournament held in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district.
Government's Commitment to Education
During the event, Sukhu emphasized the state government's dedication to providing world-class education to equip students for global competition.He outlined strict enforcement measures for the new policy, indicating that students caught with mobile phones would incur a fine of Rs 500, and the devices would be confiscated.
Mandatory Counselling for Parents
The chief minister stated that parents of students found with phones will be required to attend compulsory counselling sessions at their respective schools.To ensure compliance, the Education Department will draft a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) addressing repeated violations.
Impact of Mobile Phone Usage
Sukhu remarked on the negative impact of mobile phone usage during lunch breaks and school hours, stating it distracts students from their studies and interpersonal development.Drawing from his own experiences as a product of the government school system, he reiterated his commitment to enhancing educational quality.
Promotion of Sports and Infrastructure Development
In addition to the educational measures, Sukhu highlighted the government's efforts to promote sports and sports tourism.He announced plans to provide employment opportunities for female athletes from Himachal Pradesh who recently participated in the Asian Games.
To celebrate the Himachal team's victory in the National Handball Championship, Sukhu declared a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh.
Infrastructure Goals
During the tournament's closing ceremony, Sukhu outlined several infrastructure goals, including the expedited completion of the indoor stadium in Ghumarwin and a local school building within the next year.He also announced plans for a new girls' hostel at Morsingi.
