T20 World Cup 2026: Three Lions On The Hunt For A Record Third Title

WHAT'S THE STORY?

England Preview T20 World Cup 2026: The Three Lions are the joint-most successful side in the history of the men’s T20 tournament — having been champions in 2010 and 2022. All that is in the past now.

England come into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup full of confidence, having outclassed Sri Lanka 3-0 in their last assignment ahead of the competition.

England’s T20I side has improved significantly since Jos Buttler and Matthew Mott’s poor run from the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Harry Brook’s appointment as white-ball captain, along with coach Brendon McCullum’s ‘Bazball’ approach, has revitalised the team, focusing on sixes, strike rates, and general power-hitting.

In fact, after their semifinal loss to India in 2024, England have played 25 T20Is, winning 15, losing seven, and three ending in no results.

Under Harry Brook’s leadership since mid-2025, England have dominated bilateral series, winning 10 of 11 matches.

Explosive opener Phil Salt, who recently set England’s highest T20I score and played a key role in RCB’s IPL title win, would be key, especially with England boasting one of the best batting strike rates. Jacob Bethell’s rise adds depth, while veteran Adil Rashid leads a dangerous spin unit supported by Liam Dawson, Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed.

All-rounder Sam Curran, who was Player of the Tournament in 2022, will be a crucial pivot for England.

However, concerns remain over the pace attack beyond Jofra Archer, and Ben Duckett’s recent dip in form.

But then there’s Bazball, and in a format that suits it best.

England Team Prediction For T20 World Cup 2026
England are the clear favourites to top Group C, which also has West Indies, Nepal, Italy and Scotland. Irrespective of where they eventually finish, England can face the likes of Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand in Super 8 Group 2 – all matches of which will be played in Sri Lanka. The Three Lions look good to qualify for the Super 8 stage easily, but their progression to the semi-finals will be tough, given that Sri Lanka and Pakistan — as per pre-determined tournament rules — will be playing all their games on the same fields.
