A New Chapter Begins
In a fascinating move that bridges Pune's rich architectural heritage with contemporary lifestyle, a venerable 70-year-old wada, traditionally a symbol
of communal living, has been revitalized and transformed into a unique dining destination. This initiative breathes new life into historic structures, repurposing them as vibrant cultural hubs. The visionary behind this unique venture is Nikhil Oza, a 37-year-old chartered accountant, who previously achieved considerable success with his MH 12 Pav bhaji chain, which now boasts an impressive 32 outlets. Oza's ambition was to create a space that honored the past while serving present-day needs, finding the perfect setting in a historically significant wada on Tilak Road, leased from the Shah family. The initial concept was even more intriguing, titled 'The Mystery of Tilak Road,' before settling on the current name, 'Soo, be it Cafe,' which officially opened its doors on March 12, 2026. This name thoughtfully conveys a message of acceptance and comfort, aiming to foster an environment where patrons can feel entirely at ease and be themselves.
Preserving Heritage, Embracing Charm
The allure of the wada extended far beyond its mere structural presence; it was the inherent potential within its design that truly captivated Oza. He envisioned a place where visitors could truly immerse themselves in the distinct ambiance of each room, encouraging them to linger and relax. His paramount objective was to meticulously preserve the original character of the wada, a commitment that presented a significant array of challenges. The architecture of the space, with its multiple distinct areas, was a key feature he aimed to protect. The cafe now thoughtfully incorporates an inviting outdoor veranda, a comfortable indoor seating area, a dedicated pop-up space designed for students, and a charming small shop. Furthermore, the second floor has been thoughtfully adapted to serve as a versatile event space, enhancing the venue's utility. This vegetarian establishment is staffed by 30 dedicated individuals and offers a menu specializing in continental favorites such as pizzas, pastas, and burgers, with a particular emphasis on their signature wood-fired pizzas, notably the exquisite creamy four-cheese truffle pizza.
A Space for Reconnection
Patrons have consistently described the café's atmosphere as both vintage and exceptionally cozy, often highlighting the superb quality of the food. Many have noted the unusual yet aesthetically pleasing uniqueness of the overall ambiance, which sets it apart from conventional dining experiences. For Nikhil Oza, this transformed wada represents more than just a successful business venture; he articulates its meaning in a single, powerful word: 'Peace.' His overarching vision for 'Soo, be it' is to cultivate a sanctuary, a place where individuals can consciously detach from the constant distractions of their digital devices and foster genuine connections with themselves and the people around them. It’s a deliberate effort to create an environment that encourages mindful presence and meaningful interaction amidst the hustle of modern life.
