Seat Availability vs. Applications
This year, Maharashtra has opened up a significant number of seats for admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, offering a total of 1,14,826
spots across 8,701 schools. Despite this substantial availability, the number of applications received has notably dipped compared to the preceding year. While last year saw over 3 lakh candidates vying for these reserved seats in private schools, the current cycle has garnered just over 2.89 lakh applications. This presents an interesting contrast between the ample opportunities provided and the reduced interest from prospective students' guardians. The Directorate of Primary Education has emphasized that the application window has closed, with no further extensions planned, and the subsequent stages of the admission process, including the online lottery, will be announced separately.
District Disparities Revealed
A closer look at the application data reveals stark regional differences within Maharashtra. Pune district has emerged as the frontrunner, attracting the highest volume of applications with over 54,000 submissions for its 18,060 available seats spread across 916 schools. This indicates a strong demand in the district, potentially due to its urban nature and greater number of private schools. Conversely, Sindhudurg district stands at the other end of the spectrum, registering the lowest number of applications, with merely 165 interested parties for 271 seats across 46 institutions. This disparity highlights varying levels of awareness, accessibility, or demand for RTE admissions across different parts of the state. The Directorate of Primary Education is now proceeding with the admission schedule following the closure of applications.
Relaxed Norms and Preferences
The admission process this year was influenced by a significant relaxation of distance restrictions, a change that followed a Bombay High Court order. Initially, parents were limited to applying for schools within a one-kilometer radius of their residence. However, this was later amended to allow applications for schools within a three-kilometer radius, and even further in some cases. This adjustment aimed to broaden choices for parents. The Directorate of Primary Education has clarified the subsequent seat allotment policy: while applications considered schools beyond one kilometer, preference for seat allocation will be given to schools located within that one-kilometer radius. Only if seats remain vacant within the preferred proximity will schools located further away be considered. This layered approach ensures that local options are prioritized while still accommodating broader geographical reach.
