The MP's advocacy stems from the airport's pivotal role as a primary aviation gateway for a vast population spanning Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, encompassing approximately seven crore individuals. Currently, the airport handles around 40 lakh passengers annually, well within its 60 lakh passenger capacity, indicating ample room for expansion and increased operations. The existing international connectivity is limited to flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, operated by IndiGo, underscoring the urgent need for diversification and enhanced global reach.
