year, designed to propel crucial infrastructure development within India's northeastern territories. This scheme underwent a significant restructuring in the 2022-23 fiscal period, being bifurcated into two distinct components: NESIDS (Roads) and NESIDS (Other Than Roads Infrastructure). This strategic division allows for a more focused and effective approach to addressing the diverse infrastructural needs of the region. The recent allocation of Rs 4703.81 crore to support 82 separate projects underscores the scheme's commitment to tangible progress. These projects, spanning from FY 2023-24 through the current FY 2025-26, with data accurate as of January 31, 2026, demonstrate a robust pipeline of development activities aimed at creating essential physical assets and enhancing the quality of life for the inhabitants of the North Eastern states.

Project Pillars: Roads & Beyond

Under the NESIDS framework, the 'Roads' component is specifically designed to tackle critical needs in transportation infrastructure. State Level Empowered Committees (SLECs) within each North Eastern state play a pivotal role, meticulously recommending projects focused on building and improving roads and bridges, along with associated auxiliary infrastructure. This ensures that development aligns directly with the unique priorities and identified gaps within each state. Complementing this, the NESIDS (Other Than Roads Infrastructure) component addresses a broader spectrum of developmental needs. Through similar recommendations from SLECs, this stream supports projects aimed at establishing robust infrastructure for primary and secondary healthcare facilities, enhancing primary and secondary education systems, ensuring reliable water supply networks, fostering industrial development, promoting sports, and expanding telecommunications reach. This dual-pronged approach ensures that NESIDS addresses both the foundational connectivity requirements and the vital social and economic infrastructure essential for holistic regional advancement.

Ensuring Timely Execution

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) is actively engaged in implementing robust mechanisms to guarantee the timely and efficient completion of projects sanctioned under NESIDS and other related schemes. A multi-layered monitoring system is in place, involving periodic site visits and inspections by officials from MDoNER, the North Eastern Council, and dedicated Field Technical Support Units (FTSUs). These supervisory activities are complemented by regular review meetings, where State Governments of the North Eastern Region are convened to discuss progress and proactively address any potential bottlenecks that might impede project execution. To further bolster oversight and ensure adherence to quality standards, MDoNER has introduced Project Quality Monitors and Third Party Technical Inspection Agencies (PQM/TPTI). This comprehensive approach to monitoring and review is crucial for expediting the delivery of these vital infrastructure projects and ensuring they yield their intended developmental benefits across the region.
