Indian Math Education: A Pedagogical Overhaul Needed

WHAT'S THE STORY?

A spotlight is cast on mathematics education in India, revealing a crucial need for pedagogical change. Despite the achievements of Indian students in mathematical research and competitions, numeracy levels remain surprisingly low. The key lies in fixing the way math is taught, not in chasing outdated ideas.

of university education and national pride separate. The core objective of university education is to familiarize students with evidence-based learning, its methodologies, and frameworks. This should enable them to compete globally and engage in cutting-edge research. Reorienting the curriculum towards the past will not enhance learning.

Pedagogy Over Curriculum

There is a pressing need for a pedagogical fix within India's mathematics education system, as opposed to a reorientation of the curriculum. Although some Indians achieve remarkable success in mathematical research, and many children receive accolades, including in Maths Olympiads, the numeracy levels amongst school students, as reported by ASER and PISA inter-country comparisons, are low. In many households, mathematics is a subject of fear and anxiety rather than a source of joy. This sentiment is generally attributable to poor teaching methodologies, an area that the UGC should prioritize with the assistance of dedicated mathematics educators, rather than seeking nostalgic pursuits of a golden past.
