What's Happening?
Tokyo Kisen Co., Ltd. and Marindows Inc. have launched Japan's first pure battery-powered EV harbor tugboat development project. The tugboat, set to operate in the ports of Yokohama and Kawasaki, aims to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Carbon Neutral Port policy. Building on previous experience with hybrid electric-powered tugs, the project will develop a tugboat powered solely by onboard lithium-ion batteries, featuring a large-capacity battery system and fast chargers. The project is scheduled for completion in 2030, with detailed feasibility studies and design phases planned over the next few years.
