What's Happening?
Hoda Eldardiry, an associate professor at Virginia Tech, is partnering with the healthcare startup LiteraSeed Inc. to improve communication between patients and medical providers using artificial intelligence (AI). The collaboration aims to address miscommunication issues that contribute to misdiagnoses and preventable hospital deaths, which cost the U.S. healthcare system approximately $238 billion annually. LiteraSeed has developed a visual-based communication tool to help patients convey critical health information, overcoming language and literacy barriers. Eldardiry's Machine Learning Laboratory, supported by a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation, will integrate this tool with electronic health record systems to enhance data-driven healthcare delivery.
