Scientists in Greece and internationally are calling for the establishment of a self-ruling research authority to address issues of weak strategy, low funding, and bureaucratic hurdles in the current research framework. Over 260 signatories have sent an open letter to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Development Ministry, proposing the transformation of existing institutions like the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation into an independent body. This new authority would ensure transparent and merit-based evaluation, akin to ASEP, the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection. The appeal follows disputes over the 'Trust Your Stars' program and resignations from the National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation.
