What's Happening?
Ocean Networks has announced a partnership with Prysmian and International Telecom to develop the Hawaiian Islands Fiber Link (HIFL), a subsea cable system aimed at enhancing broadband connectivity across Hawaii. The project is part of Hawaii's Connect Kākou initiative and will span approximately 740 kilometers, connecting multiple islands including Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, Maui, Kauaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Molokaʻi. Prysmian will supply the cable, while International Telecom will handle engineering and installation. The project is overseen by the University of Hawaiʻi System Office for Information Technology, with support from the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaiʻi. The HIFL is expected to be operational by late 2026, funded by a $120 million package from federal grants and private equity.
