What's Happening?
The US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has awarded Pratt Miller a contract to prototype a solution for the Expeditionary Hydrogen On Ship & Shore (EHOSS) project. This initiative aims to generate, store, and distribute hydrogen both aboard ships and ashore, creating a tactical micro hydrogen supply chain. The Pratt Miller system is designed as a containerized hydrogen generation, storage, and dispensing system capable of providing more than 20 kilograms of high-purity hydrogen daily. This system supports disaggregated and expeditionary operations by offering lower acoustic and thermal signatures, extended range, and greater energy autonomy. Despite the challenges of using hydrogen as a fuel, such as the energy required for production and storage, the DIU is pushing forward with this project to overcome limitations in the commercial sector.
