Amazon is seeking permission from local authorities in Darlington to launch the UK's first aerial package delivery service using drones. The company has assured that the noise generated by drones will be less than or similar to that of delivery vans. Planning documents submitted to Darlington Council indicate that drone noise levels will not exceed 72 decibels, comparable to household appliances like washing machines. The trial involves four drones operating from Amazon's Darlington warehouse, flying at altitudes between 55 and 85 meters, and delivering packages by dropping them into gardens from a height of four meters. Amazon plans to conduct deliveries on weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm, weather permitting, with the capability of completing 21 flights per hour. Despite assurances, some residents have expressed concerns about the potential noise impact, citing the unpredictable and intrusive nature of drone sounds.
