Chelsea are said to be closing in on signing Jorrel Hato from Ajax Amsterdam, with reports yesterday from both Fabrizio Romano and The Athletic’s David Ornstein agreeing that not only are the Blues making good progress in the negotiations, but that a deal is imminent.
So that’s cool and all, but what’s even nicer is that, for once, we appear to be winning the transfer fee tussle as well. Ajax may have rejected our initial €40m bid last week, but according to De Telegraaf, they will be getting nowhere
near the €55-60m they had been hoping for, or even the €50m that they would’ve wound wonderful.
Obviously, they’re still getting paid handsomely, but according to that report, Chelsea are not willing to go higher than €41m and Ajax are now resigned to accepting a total package deal worth just €43-45m. These are relatively small amounts we’re haggling over when compared to the overall fee, but I suppose it’s the principle of it all.
Ajax’s willingness to deal at perhaps slightly suboptimal terms is apparently down to their own financial situation, wherein they cannot risk missing out on this windfall of cash, as well as Hato’s increasing insistence on getting the move to Chelsea.
