According to a report from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Red Bull organization has interest in bringing back Prodigal Son — and Bayern Munich sporting director — Christoph Freund:
EXCL | RB would like to bring Christoph #Freund back from FC Bayern. Freund is already aware of the concrete interest. It remains unclear whether the role would be in Leipzig or Salzburg – and how Freund feels about RB’s interest.
He is under contract as Bayern’s sporting director until 2027. Structural
ADchanges at Bayern across all levels after the transfer window cannot be ruled out.
Plettenberg added more context that was captured by @iMiaSanMia as well:
Both the future of Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are uncertain. Structural changes at Bayern after the transfer window are possible. The names of Markus Krösche and Ralf Rangnick are being considered by Bayern bosses in case of changes.
This news is interesting if true. Eberl has been tasked with the near-impossible task of improving the team at multiple positions and potentially finding support to help compensate for the temporary loss of Jamal Musiala — while also selling off quite a few players, who do no necessarily want to leave.
As for Freund, he had a one-transfer window cameo in running personnel back in January of 2024 and it was a mess. While tasked with helping bolster Bayern Munich’s youth and development structure, Freund has not made much headway since receiving his new directive once Eberl was hired to take over sporting and personnel work with the first team.
