Elias Diaz lined a ball into left field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning that allowed Jose Iglesias to score from second base to give the San Diego Padres a 7-6 walk-off win over the New York Mets at Petco Park, Monday.

Diaz found himself down in the count 1-2 against Mets reliever Gregory Soto, but he was able to lift a ball over the infield and drop it in front of the New York outfielders to give San Diego the win.

Robert Suarez came out of the bullpen to take his position on the mound in the top of the ninth inning with San Diego holding onto a 6-5 lead. Suarez was looking to secure a win for the Padres, but instead he allowed a solo home run to Ronny Mauricio that allowed the Mets to tie the game, 6-6.

It would be understandable if Padres fans, and even Suarez himself, did not think he would be making an appearance in the game. The Mets jumped out to a 5-1 lead after a four-run top of the fifth inning.

San Diego responded though in the bottom of the fifth and scored five runs to take a one-run lead, 6-5.

Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the inning with a double and was followed by Luis Arraez, who hit a two-run home run to right field that hit the foul pole. The two run shot made the score 5-3.

Manny Machado singled before Jackson Merrill popped out for the first out of the bottom of the fifth inning. Xander Bogaerts doubled to put runners at second and third. Gavin Sheets popped out for the second out of the inning. Jake Cronenworth made the score 5-4 with an RBI-single, leaving runners at the corners.

Bryce Johnson singled through the right side of the infield, which allowed Bogaerts to score and moved Cronenworth to third, making the score 5-5. The tie game was short lived due to a single to left by Diaz that scored Cronenworth and gave San Diego a 6-5 lead.

Padres starter Dylan Cease had a rough night. Not only did he allow five runs, which included a Mark Vientos grand slam in the top of the fifth inning, he was also hit on the back of the head by a hard ground ball back to the mound by Francisco Lindor.

Cease would have allowed two home runs to Vientos in back-to-back plate appearances, but Tatis Jr. showed why he is a Platinum Glove Award recipient. Vientos hit a ball deep into right field and Tatis Jr. jumped at the wall to take away what would have been a two-run home run, keeping the game tied at 1-1.

Cease lasted just 4 2/3 innings in his last start at Petco Park before the trade deadline. He allowed five runs on five hits with five walks and nine strikeouts.

Cease was not the only Padres pitcher who got the benefit of having Tatis Jr. in right field. Adrian Morejon was on the mound in the top of the sixth inning and Mauricio hit a flare into shallow right field. Tatis Jr. was able to sprint in and slide forward to make the catch.

Eight of the nine batters in the Padres’ starting lineup had a hit in the game. The only starter not to get a hit was Sheets. Bogaerts had three hits and Arraez, Machado, Johnson and Diaz each recorded two hits in the win.

San Diego continues its series with New York, Tuesday at 6:40 p.m.
