The Dallas Cowboys are currently in Oxnard, California for their 2025 training camp. One key player whose injury status is an issue is former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs. The former second-round pick decided to spend most of his offseason in South Florida as he recovered from major knee surgery. He will start the season on the PUP list.

With that decision by Diggs came a hefty price. He has a clause in his contract that requires him to be in attendance for roughly 84% of the Cowboys' offseason

program. As a result, the former interception king will lose $500,000 of his $9 million salary in 2025 for not showing up.

This elephant in the room was sure to be addressed at the opening training camp press conference on Monday. When it was, team owner Jerry Jones didn't pull any punches.

We expect a player paid like Trevon to be here all the time. We expect him to be leading, expect him to be leading, but that’s not new. He didn’t earn it, he didn’t come. That’s in his contract, he doesn’t get that unless he’s going to be here.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones doubled down on what the outspoken elder Jones had to say.

The de-escalation is contractual. It’s spelled out. When he decided to train in South Florida, he understood what the consequences would be.

Things with Diggs and the Cowboys have been a little shaky for some time now. Interestingly, it started from another injury situation. When Diggs was rehabbing a torn ACL in 2023, the Cowboys didn’t think that Diggs was as diligent in the process as he should have been, and this was after he signed a five-year extension for $97 million.

Diggs only played in two games that season, and the 2024 campaign saw him miss another six games. Adding his present absence to the equation, it's only put more strain on the relationship between Diggs on the organization.

It’s important to have the right body language and all of that when you are one of the rare, rare financially paid and gifted players. You’ve got to have some leadership about you.

That's a clear message from Jerry Jones to Diggs. The fact that the Cowboys didn't have to enforce the penalty on Diggs, but did, is another message. Dallas can save around $54 million if Diggs is cut before July 1 next year. So, if they don't see what they need to see whenever Diggs comes back in 2025, they have the option to move on.
