WHAT'S THE STORY?

The Seattle Seahawks began Week 2 of training camp on Monday with their first padded practice. When the pads come on, the intensity and physical nature of practice tends to ramp up, and usually by the end of the week it leads to the odd skirmish here and there. Nothing to report on the roughhousing front, but there was some rough news that was confirmed by Coach Mike Macdonald.

Let’s get to the Day 5 recap!

News

Kenny McIntosh’s season over, Seahawks sign DK Kaufman

As expected, the Seahawks placed running

back Kenny McIntosh on injured reserve after Mike Macdonald confirmed he tore his ACL in Saturday’s practice. He’ll have surgery on Tuesday and obviously his season is over. A real awful way for McIntosh’s season to end before it even begins.

NC State rookie DK Kaufman was signed as McIntosh’s replacement, switching over from defensive back to running back. He’ll also factor in special teams as a kick returner.

Seahawks bring in five players for tryouts

The NFL transaction wire says the Seahawks brought in five players for tryouts.

  • Jesse Luketa, LB, Penn State
  • Travis Martin, DB, Langston
  • Efe Obada, DE, International Player Pathway
  • Benny Sapp, DB, Northern Iowa
  • Ridge Texada, DB, North Texas

Martin and Texada are undrafted rookie defensive backs, Luketa spent four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, Sapp has spent time with the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons, and Obada has the distinction of being the first player from the International Player Pathway program to make a 53-man roster. His backstory is as heartbreaking as it is amazing that he’s made it to the NFL. Obada is 33 years old and has been in the NFL in some capacity since 2015, recording 15 total sacks (although none since 2022).

Notes and Quotes

The rotation continues at center and right guard

After a few days as credentialed media, former Field Gulls podcast host and current Seahawks Forever podcast host Dan Viens was in attendance with fans at VMAC. Not every 11-on-11 session will be like this, as Mike Macdonald has indicated significant rotation at center and right guard, but Monday’s practice predominantly featured Jalen Sundell over Christian Haynes and Anthony Bradford.

Jalen Milroe gets pick 6’d by a familiar foe

We had a rookie-on-rookie moment at camp. Third-round pick Jalen Milroe was intercepted by second-round pick Nick Emmanwori, a familiar foe given Alabama and South Carolina played each other last season. I’m pretty sure this is the first pick-6 of camp for any Seahawks QB, and if it’s going to happen, you’d love to see a rookie make a big play even at the expense of another rookie.

Riq Woolen also picked off Sam Darnold, which is good news less because of the interception and more because Woolen was limping a bit earlier in practice.

Ernest Jones IV rests, giving Drake Thomas an opportunity for first-team reps

Drake Thomas was claimed off waivers two seasons ago after he was considered a surprise cut by the Las Vegas Raiders. Having played primarily on special teams, Thomas is the “next man up” in the inside linebacker depth chart after Ernest Jones IV and Tyrice Knight.

With Jones out for personal reasons on Monday, Thomas essentially took Ernest’s spot for the day. This clip of 1 v 1 pass-blocking doubles as George Holani hype reel for those who believe he’ll get on the 53-man roster this year.

Mike Macdonald wants more from his offense

Not everything will come up roses in camp and that’s not supposed to happen. Speaking with media after practice, Macdonald had several lines critiquing the offense, particularly the running game.

“We started practice the right way today, which was good,” Macdonald said. “We haven’t done that every day on defense, so that was nice. Offense needs to respond tomorrow because they didn’t start fast enough today.”

The key phrase from Macdonald came after a question about whether or not he could see the impact of Abe Lucas and Robbie Ouzts in the run game. You want an honest answer? Here you go.

“I have to watch the tape, but right now, no,” Macdonald said. “No knock on them, but we didn’t run the ball very well today, so we got to be better.”

Macdonald didn’t get into specifics on what he wanted from the run game on the offensive side of the ball, but later added, “We’re going to be itching to fix, and that’s how you become a better football team.”
