Liverpool’s U21 summer preparations continue apace, as the Baby Reds look to ready themselves for the year ahead. Yesterday, the lads took on Celtic’s academy in a friendly. It was a day that those involved will likely remember.
Led by the Academy player most tipped to be the next to move into the first team, Kaide Gordon, Liverpool put Celtic to the sword. Gordon was responsible for a brace and assist as the Reds rode six first-half goals to an 8-nil victory on the day.
As we’ve often mentioned, results
for the Academy are less about who won and lost, but rather how the game went and how the lads responded to the challenges of implementing a game plan. When the scoreline is this lopsided, though, one can sense that the only real take away is that the lads had an outstanding day. The kind of day that the coaches can point to as an example of what’s possible when folks are locked-in and committed to the overall endeavor.
For fans of the club, we can only hope that the lads all take moments like these to heart. Because we know that it’s rare to have performances like this; where everything seems to be breaking your way. And you’ll need times like this to draw on when - as is more often in the game - the work is frustrating and nothing seems to be going right.
Here’s hoping the lads can use this as fuel and that it does portend good fortune for the upcoming campaign.
