Angel Fierro has been forced to withdraw from his Super Lightweight fight against Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, which was scheduled to go down this weekend (Sat., July 19, 2025) as one of the featured bouts on the “Pacquiao vs. Barrios” event in Las Vegas, Nevada.
His trainer, Robert Garcia, made the decision to pull Fierro from the much-anticipated rematch
as a result of a dangerous weight cut his fighter went through to try and make the 140-pound limit prior to weigh ins (video here).
“I want to apologize to all of the fans that made the trip to Vegas, to Pitbull and his team and everyone involved in the fight,” he said in a statement. “I made the decision this morning to not allow my fighter, Angel Fierro, to cut anymore weight and instructed our team to take him to the hospital.
“I have a responsibility to not only prepare my fighter to fight, but also to keep him safe. The last few pounds were going to be too dangerous for him to cut and I made the decision to pull him out. Again, we apologize to everyone involved.”
While a tough call, it is undoubtedly the best one to make for Fierro’s health. The two hard-hitting combatants went toe-to-toe in an all-out war earlier this year, which resulted in Fierro defeating “Pitbull” via unanimous decision (video highlights here).
Aside from Manny Pacquiao’s highly-anticipated return to face WBC Welterweight champion, Mario Barrios, on Prime Video pay-per-view (PPV) in the main event, the card will also feature Sebastian Fundora defending his WBC Super Welterweight title against Tim Tszyu.
