Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs beat Indianapolis (Pirates), 6-2.

Brandon Birdsell was terrific tonight, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

Birdsell finished the night with a win after going six innings and allowing no runs on two hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Third baseman Hayden Cantrelle hit his first home run of the season with the bases empty in the fifth inning. He was 2 for 3 with two RBi and two runs scored.

First baseman Jonathon Long barely missed a home run in the fifth inning and settled for a two-run double. Long was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Right fielder Owen Caissie was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He scored one run.

Miguel Amaya caught seven innings in a rehab assignment. He went 2 for 4 and scored one run.

Knoxville Smokies

The Knoxville Smokies turned off the lights on the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 11-3.

Starter Grant Kipp got the win while surrendering just one run on two hits over five innings. The one run came on a solo home run in the fourth inning. Kipp struck out six and walked no one, although he did hit one batter.

First baseman BJ Murray Jr. hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning. It was his 16th on the season. Murray went 2 for 4 with a double, the home run and a walk. He drove in four total runs and scored three times.

Catcher Casey Opitz was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI single. Opitz also scored once.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs brought the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals) to justice, 5-1.

Kevin Valdez started and got his first South Bend win after giving up just one run on two hits over six innings. Valdez did struggle with control as he walked five and struck out two.

Luis Martinez-Gomez did not allow a run or a hit over the next two innings. He did walk one and struck out one.

First baseman Brian Kalmer hit two doubles—the first one drove in the game-tying run in the second inning and the second one added on three more insurance runs in the eighth. Kalmer was 2 for 4 with the four RBI. He scored one run.

Third baseman Edgar Alvarez went 1 for 2 with two walks and two runs scored.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans put a leash on the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays), 3-0.

Walker Powell pitched the first five innings and got the win after surrendering just two hits and issuing two walks. He struck out two.

Kevin Camacho held Charleston scoreless over the next three innings on two hits. He walked two, hit one batter and struck out four.

Ethan Bell pitched the ninth and got the save. He got into a bit of trouble with a one-out walk and an error, but a 6-3 double play ended the game. Bell struck out one.

Shortstop Angel Cepeda hit an RBI single in the second inning. He was 1 for 3 with a walk. Cepeda scored once.

Right fielder Eli Lovich went 3 for 4 with a steal.
