It’s been a tale of two summers for Bronny James and Dalton Knecht.
Bronny had a spectacular Summer League, which demonstrated that he’s on the right track. James ended Las Vegas Summer League averaging 14.3 points and 3.8 assists while shooting 47% from the field.
Knecht, on the other hand, struggled all summer. He ended Las Vegas Summer League play averaging 10.3 points on 27.9% shooting from the floor.
With both the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer League wrapped up, that typically marks the end
of summer play for NBA players.
However, Bronny James and Dalton Knecht might have some more organized competition awaiting them via the Drew League.
In an article written by Mark Medina on RG, Drew League Commissioner Dino Smiley states that both Lakers players could suit up and play this weekend.
“I’ve heard Bronny [James], but nothing clear on that yet. I heard Bronny might play. But nothing concrete. Earlier in the summer, there was talk about Dalton Knecht and Cam Christie playing.”
The Drew League is a pro-am competition that takes place every summer in Los Angeles.
The league comprises a diverse mix of NBA players, international players and former collegiate athletes.
So, don’t expect intense NBA-level play, but it’s always good for younger players to get some quality runs wherever they can find them. The Drew League certainly qualifies as that.
If Bronny and Knecht play, they will undoubtedly get the opposing players' best, as they’ll try to have their 15 minutes of fame, stopping Lakers players in front of some max capacity crowds.
James and Knecht wouldn’t be the first Lakers to participate in the Drew League. LeBron James played back in 2023. He was absolutely dominant, scoring 42 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in a 104-102 win.
Kobe Bryant also participated in the Drew League during the summer of 2011. He had 45 points, including the game-winning shot.
With the hoopla that always surrounds anything Bronny-related, expect mass hysteria if he does participate in the Drew League this summer.
