The Philadelphia Phillies (58-44) staked themselves to an early five-run lead but were unable to complete the series sweep after a slugfest with the visiting Boston Red Sox (55-49) ended in a 9-8 extra-innings loss.

The offense came out guns blazing in the bottom of the first inning with a first-pitch single by Trea Turner and two mammoth back-to-back homers by Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. It was Schwarber’s 34tg on the year and ninth in the month of the July. For Harper, it was the 350th of his

career and 166th as a Phillie, one ahead of…Schwarber.

Nick Castellanos and Bryson Stott would add solo shots of their own in the third and fourth innings respectively to extend the lead to five.

Jesus Luzardo got through the first four frames with just 51 pitches collecting six punch outs and allowing only a walk before unraveling in the fifth.

It began with a leadoff double by Masataka Yoshida and a four-pitch walk to Ceddanne Rafaela. Luzardo got the next two batters out before walking Marcelo Mayer to load the bases. Down 2-0 in the count, Rob Refsnyder fouled a fastball high into foul territory. JT Realmuto and Luzardo gave chase but no one had eyes on the ball and it landed just beyond the batters box on the first base side to extend the inning.

Refsnyder would walk in Boston’s first run of the game and Jarren Duran walked in their second four pitches later.

At this point, Rob Thomson finally made a call to the bullpen to have relief start warming up, but it wouldn’t arrive in time. Luzardo delivered a 1-1 changeup to Romy Gonzalez who shipped it out to left center for a grand slam and 6-5 Red Sox lead.

The rested bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to keep the game within reach and Realmuto redeemed himself for the foul ball gaffe with a game-tying solo shot in the bottom of the eighth.

Max Lazar came on in the tenth and gave up a double to Trevor Story to score the ghost runner.

Schwarber brought the score level again in the bottom of the tenth with an RBI single and was pinch-run for with Weston Wilson, who got thrown out attempting to steal second to end the inning.

After commiting two pivotal interference infractions in the first two games of the series, Red Sox catcher, Carlos Narvaez, got his own redemption with a two-run home run off of Seth Johnson in the eleventh inning.

Down to their final out in the bottom of the eleventh, Johan Rojas brought Harper home with a pinch-hit RBI single to cut the deficit to one. Max Kepler fouled off a few pitches to stay alive against Sox lefty, Brennan Bernardino, but was eventually retired on a called strike to end the game.

Phils travel to the Bronx to start a series against the New York Yankees on Friday as Taijuan Walker will face Will Warren.
