Yahoo! Sports | Billy Heyen: With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the rumor mill has begun to spin. According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees have been in discussions with the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Brian Cashman seeming to be monitoring the markets of five players: Ke’Bryan Hayes, David Bednar, Mitch Keller, Dennis Santana, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. These players give us some insight as to what the Yankees may be targeting: starting pitchers (Keller), relievers with swing-and-miss stuff (Bednar,
Santana), third basemen (Hayes), and bench depth (IKF).
The Athletic | Chris Kirschner: (subscription needed) While the Yankees’ hole at third base has been a focus of the fanbase since, honestly, the offseason, The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner argues that the Yankees’ real need at the deadline is pitching. Due to a series of injuries, the team could certainly use a boost in the rotation (as Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt, Marcus Stroman, and Ryan Yarbrough have hit the IL this season, and had it not been for the All-Star Break, Max Fried would have joined them), but it is the relief corps that needs a real boost: aside from Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and Tim Hill, the battered and bruised bullpen (which itself is missing several arms to injuries) is lacking in pitchers who do not give the fanbase — and Aaron Boone — heart attacks on a nightly basis.
SNY | Tom Hanslin: Speaking of the trade deadline, Yankees prospect Spencer Jones has been on fire since earning his promotion to Triple-A Scranton in June’s final days. Nobody knows whether the Yankees view him more as a trade chip or as a piece for the future, and this is arguably the first time since his dominant performance in spring training last season that the left-handed clone of Aaron Judge has actually looked like a potentially viable major leaguer.
Yahoo! Sports | Ryan Young: Major League Baseball has opened an investigation into the altercation between Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Eddie Pérez Saturday night, in which the Atlanta coach pointed repeatedly at his head. The incident appeared to stem from Chisholm relaying signs to batter Anthony Volpe from second base, during the beginning of the Yankees’ big comeback. While Pérez claims that his intent was to tell Chisholm to “use his head,” MLB wants to rule out the possibility that he was threatening to have the second baseman hit in the head during his next plate appearance.
MLB Trade Rumors | Steve Adams: Former Yankees reliever David Robertson agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday evening. The 40-year-old right-hander, who had been linked to both the Yankees and Mets in recent weeks, will sign a one-year, $16-million contract, of which he will receive approximately $6 million prorated for the final two months or so of the season. He had a 3.00 ERA and 12.3 K/9 last year for Texas, but this will be his third separate stint with the Phillies, all of which have come since leaving the Yankees via free agency (for the second time) in the 2018-19 offseason.
