The Atlanta Braves announced that infielder Jonathan Ornelas was added to the team’s active roster as the additional player for today’s MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN.
Ornelas, 25, was picked-up by Atlanta from the Texas Rangers toward the end of May. The infielder had appeared with Texas in each of the last three seasons, including earlier this season. His opportunities had been limited with only 54 plate appearances across 30 games since his MLB debut in 2023.
He has
not hit well with Triple-A Gwinnett with a .645 OPS in 49 games. That is slightly better than the .574 OPS he produced in his 30 games with Triple-A Round Rock prior to joining the Braves organization.
A strong and versatile defender, Ornelas give the Braves an option at shortstop - other than Luke Williams - if the team opts to pinch-hit for Nick Allen, as has been a regular occurrence of late.
More than 85,000 fans are expected for this evening’s match-up between the Braves and Cincinnati Reds.
