Earlier today, left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto was added to the 40-Man Roster, designating fellow southpaw Jose Castillo for assignment in a corresponding move.
Soto joins up with the rest of the Mets for the first time since being traded from Orioles on Friday afternoon and will be available to pitch in tonight’s game against the Giants. The two-time All-Star has been solid this year—posting a 3.96 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched. Although his ERA this year is a couple of ticks above
his numbers in 2021 and 2022—where he pitched to a 3.34 ERA over 124 innings—he’s nearly matched his career high strikeout rate (10.9 vs. 11.3 K/9) and is walking batters at the second-lowest rate of his career (4.5 BB/9).
Castillo, who was acquired this May from the Diamondbacks for cash considerations, is designated for assignment by the Mets for the second time this season. Despite the roster churn, he’s pitched quite well, with a 2.19 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 12 innings since being traded. If he clears waivers, he’ll return to Syracuse, where he’d join a growing group of veteran relief arms.
The Mets now have two trustworthy lefties in Soto and Brooks Raley to help neutralize elite right-handed batters down the stretch.
