The NBA players have a new union president. At the annual summer meeting of the Board of Player Representatives, Fred VanVleet was elected President of the National Basketball Players Association. VanVleet succeeds former Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum who finished a four-year term in that office.

VanVleet, a current member of the Houston Rockets, is a nine-year veteran in the NBA. He went undrafted in the 2016 draft and made his way starting in the G League. He played in 37 games for the Toronto

Raptors that first season, eventually breaking into a regular role with the club in 2017-18. He played seven seasons in Toronto, winning an NBA championship in 2019. VanVleet left Toronto after the 2022-23 season, signing a free agent deal to play with the Rockets. In June, he signed a two-year contract extension to stay with Houston worth $50 million.

Outgoing president CJ McCollum will be remembered for his role in the current seven-year Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was completed in 2023. The CBA is drawing criticism from fans in certain markets who feel that the agreement makes it difficult-to-impossible for clubs to keep all of their stars together when their contracts wind down. McCollum will now move to an advisory role within the union.
