Bryce Johnson stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners at first and second with no outs and the San Diego Padres leading the New York Mets, 2-1.

Johnson tried to get a sacrifice bunt down to move the runners to second and third, but he was unable to do so, and eventually struck out on a check swing for the first out of the inning. Johnson walked away from the plate frustrated with the at-bat, but it gave Elias Diaz an opportunity to come through with a big hit for the second consecutive

night.

Diaz delivered with a double down the left field line that allowed both runners to score from first and second base to give the Padres a 4-1 lead. The runs driven in by Diaz give him five RBI over his last three games.

The hit by Diaz unlocked a five-run inning that ended with a Manny Machado three-run home run that put San Diego in front 7-1, en route to their fourth consecutive win.

The Padres took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jackson Merrill hit an RBI-single to score Fernando Tatis Jr. to give San Diego a 1-0 lead.

Padres starter Ryan Bergert made the run stand up until he ran into trouble in the top of the fifth inning. Bergert came out of the game without recording an out in the fifth and Jeremiah Estrada entered with the bases loaded.

Estrada recorded the first out of the inning by striking out Francisco Lindor. He then allowed a sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Starling Marte to center field that allowed Brett Baty to score from third to tie the game, 1-1. Estrada got Pete Alonso to pop out to end the inning without any further damage.

The tie was broken in the bottom of the sixth inning when Merrill recorded his second RBI of the game. Merrill chopped a ground ball over Mets first baseman Alonso that rolled toward the right field corner. Luis Arraez was able to score from first and Merrill was standing on third with a triple to make the score, 2-1.

Bergert finished his start allowing one run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Five pitchers from the San Diego bullpen combined for five scoreless innings with just two hits allowed.

The Padres will look to sweep the Mets, Wednesday at 1:10 p.m.
