WHAT'S THE STORY?

Liverpool’s big summer continues apace as Arne Slot and Company look to turn the success of the first season into something more dynastic. Dynamic is the a great word to use when describing Liverpool’s transfer business in this window given the big-name outgoings (Trent Alexander-Arnold) and the massive incomings (Florian Wirtz).

Given Liverpool’s behavior in previous windows - and, honestly, throughout the time with FSG at the helm - it’s been expected that the club wouldn’t necessarily ever just

splash money around when trying to take the next step as a club. Prudence and temperance in the market are hallmarks of their behavior.

Which is what makes the past week feel so incredibly wild as a Liverpool fan. Not that there was interest in either Hugo Ekitike or Isak, but that interest and movement from credible sources for both emerged in a window where Liverpool have already broke their own spending record. That there was still interest to strengthen beyond what was on offer is the minor shocker.

With reports that Luís Díaz has agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich and the likes of Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nuñez looking like they’ve got one or both feet out of Anfield, it’s maybe slightly less shocking that Liverpool would go looking for more attacking firepower. Even if where they’re shopping is clearly the top-end of the world football shopping list. The Erewhon of transfer markets, as it were.

For fans hoping that Liverpool do secure a top-tier striker, the rumor mongers out of Germany are indicating that Eintracht Frankfurt have an internal agreement with Hugo Ekitike to essentially allow the striker to leave to a preferred club if that was their desire. Given reports that Liverpool were Ekitike’s only preferred club, it leaves little room for interpretation as to what the mongers mean: the path is clear for the striker to make their way to Merseyside.

Ultimately, we don’t and likely won’t know what actual agreements are in place between the clubs. What we do know, though, is that Liverpool have long been admirers of both Ekitike and Isak, they clearly have the money to spend for either, and are willing to put in the work to bring one of them on board.

I normally spend my transfer time musing and being anxious over how newly arrived players might upset the delicate ecosystem of egos and squad minutes. Not right now; this club is flexing its ambition and I want to enjoy it. Bring in all the new players and let Slot figure it out. Bring on the season.
