Things have not been going well for the D’Angelo Family in NXT since its head lost the North American championship back in March. Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo turned on Tony D’Angelo the next month at Stand & Deliver, then Family consigliere Luca Crusifino turned his back on both of them. After winning a Triple Threat over his former capos a couple weeks ago, “The Don” left his signature chapeau behind... and a lot of questions about the future of The D’Angelo Family.
The first sign of answers to those
questions came as NXT ended last night (July 29). D’Angelo was seated alone at a restaurant, and tells the server who brings him a glass of vino that he doesn’t have to call him “Don” anymore. As he’s getting ready for his meal to arrive, someone approaches from his other side. Tony D turns to face them as they cast a shadow over him. End scene.

While not identical to “Made in America”, the finale of HBO’s The Sopranos, NXT clearly used that as a template. That 2007 episode infuriated some* of its audience by ending the acclaimed series with a similar cliffhanger as its “Don” Tony Soprano was having a meal with his family amidst threats from rival families and law enforcement.
We should get some resolution to this one, however. Is Tony D finally main roster bound? Or is the start of a new feud in NXT that will move him farther away from the mafia gimmick before a call-up? It’s not just another wrinkle in the story with Stacks and Crusifino, is it?
Weigh in on The Don D’Angelo’s future below.
* Not that it matter, but I loved it. David Chase & company never told us how to feel about Tony, Carmella, and everyone in their orbit. Why should they give us an ending that delivers justice or hints at their escaping it?
