Last night’s 6-0 good vibes romp at home the Seattle Mariners had over a rival Rangers team was married by only one blemish. It came right before the games close, potentially one out and one strike away, when Trent Thornton made a move on a ball in play to cover first, and stumbled off of the mound, falling to the grass and immediately in obvious pain. Today the Mariners have released more information about the nature of Thornton’s injury, and made a corresponding move. Thornton heads to the 15-day
Injured List with a torn left Achilles, and being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma will be RHP Jackson Kowar.
Jackson Kowar will be making his third stint at the major league level this season, having posted a 1.54 ERA in his nine appearances with the club so far (11.2 IP), with an ERA- of 41 and FIP- sitting exactly at 100. When using +/- stats, 100 is dead center league average. In his sixteen Triple-A appearances he has a 2.57 ERA across 14.0 innings of work.
Trent Thornton heads back to the IL after a previous trip from May 6 to June 6 due to appendicitis, this time with a torn left Achilles. Before exiting last night’s game he had worked 1.2 innings allowing only one hit and striking out two, and in his thirty-three appearances with the club he has posted a 4.68 ERA, and an ERA- of 123 and a FIP- of 119, with 14 walks and 32 strikeouts.
For Seattle, this injury comes at perhaps one of the times that would sting the most, mere hours after the trade deadline had completed, and one where they specifically were making efforts to seek help in this area. They landed one of their targets in Caleb Ferguson, who made a good first impression in his appearance last night, but seemingly missed some of their biggest targets, as reporting linked them to some of the biggest names on the relief market. Jackson Kowar is one of the last few names on a short list of players waiting within the organization that the Mariners can call on for help, and to Kowar’s credit in the case of this swap, he will likely be used in similar mid-to-low leverage roles as Trent Thornton had been.
