The second half of the season begins tonight, and the Brewers are hot. They’re riding a seven-game winning streak, the longest streak in the majors after the Red Sox lost to the Cubs earlier today. Their 56-40 record is the third-best in the National League and tied for fourth-best in all of baseball.
However, they will have a challenge to start the second half as they travel to face the Dodgers. The Dodgers have a 58-39 record, tied for the best in the National League with the Cubs (who tied them
with that win over Boston earlier today). The Brewers’ current seven-game winning streak includes a three-game sweep of the Dodgers, but now the Brewers will have to face them at Dodger Stadium.
Before today’s game, the Brewers made a roster move, placing Sal Frelick on the 10-day IL with a strained left hamstring. Reports from earlier this week were uncertain if he would need an IL stint, but the Brewers decided to give him the time to rest. No additional details were available on how long Frelick will be out. Since the move was retroactive to July 15, Frelick could return as soon as next week’s home series against the Marlins. As a corresponding move, Blake Perkins was recalled from Triple-A Nashville. They also announced that Nestor Cortes was sent to Nashville on a rehab assignment.
The Brewers also announced two smaller moves yesterday. Drew Avans cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and was outrighted to Triple-A Nashville. Also, the Brewers made a minor league trade, acquiring catcher Andrick Nava from the Phillies for cash. Nava has been assigned to High-A Wisconsin.
Quinn Priester will get the ball to start the second half of the season. It’s been a fast rise for Priester, who started the season in the minor leagues for the Red Sox. He’s now leading off the rotation for the second half of the season for the Brewers. Priester is coming off of a quality “start” — he entered in relief of opener DL Hall — against the Nationals on July 11. In that game, he pitched six innings and allowed two runs, four hits, and two walks while striking out five. He has seen some trouble in recent starts — he allowed three runs in 3 1⁄3 innings to the Twins on June 22, then five runs (four earned) against the Marlins on July 4. However, he also had seven shutout innings with 11 strikeouts against the Rockies in that stretch. This will be Priester’s first career start against the Dodgers.
Meanwhile, Tyler Glasnow will make his second consecutive start against the Brewers in tonight’s game. He returned from the IL in his previous start on July 9, allowing just one unearned run in five innings of work. This will be his ninth career appearance — and fifth start — against the Brewers. He has a 5.26 ERA over his previous eight appearances covering 25 2⁄3 innings.
With Frelick on the IL, the Brewers have shuffled their lineup. Brice Turang moves back up into the leadoff spot tonight, with William Contreras, Jackson Chourio, and Christian Yelich lining up behind him. Andrew Vaughn moves up to fifth in the lineup, and Isaac Collins is up to sixth, getting the start in right field. Jake Bauers gets the start in left field tonight and effectively is the replacement bat in the lineup for Frelick. Caleb Durbin and Joey Ortiz round out the lineup in their usual spots.
Here are the full lineups for tonight. First pitch is set for 9:10 p.m. CT, and it will be on FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
