The 2024-2025 season will go down as a historic year for Arizona Athletics’ ability to produce top draft picks across America’s major sports.
With Brendan Summerhill’s selection in the first round of the MLB Draft Sunday, Arizona became one of three schools to have players selected in the first round of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts.
Summerhill went No. 43 overall to the Tampa Bay Rays. He joins Arizona football’s Tetairoa McMillan (No. 8 overall to Carolina) and Arizona men’s basketball’s Carter Bryant
(No. 14 overall to San Antonio) as first round draft picks.

Arizona joins North Carolina and Michigan as the only schools to have players drafted in the first round of all three sports.
This is the first time Arizona has produced first round picks in the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts in the same year since 2008, according to Justin Spears of the Arizona Daily Star. That year, Antoine Cason (NFL), Jerryd Bayless (NBA) and Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth (MLB) all were taken in the first round.
