WHAT'S THE STORY?

Welcome back to our weekly Seattle Mariners minor league roundup! With the trade deadline looming, it’s a foregone conclusion we’ll be saying goodbye to at least a few of these guys, but just how many is yet to be seen. It sounds as though Jerry and Justin are looking to be active in the coming days, so if you’re fond of hanging on to prospects, buckle up.

Tacoma Rainiers

57-45

Despite the recent departure of Brandyn Garcia from the backend of their bullpen, the Rainiers have been on a nice little run here since the second

half kicked off and find themselves with yet another 5-1 series win over Round Rock this week. Keep the good vibes rolling!

There’s been a substantial amount of speculation surrounding Tyler Locklear and his outlook with the team moving forward, but I for one am hoping he’ll be sticking with the M’s beyond the impending trade deadline. I’ve always been a big far of his game and feel as though he’s finally back to the kind of imposing hitter he’s been for the bulk of his professional career. Launching five more homers this week in an 11-23 series, Locklear could easily slip into the right handed slugger role the major league team is currently lacking and get reps against left handed pitching when necessary. Even if the fit’s not there this season, it feels like any deal with Locklear would be tough to get commensurate value back in return, thus making me cringe at the thought of a deal involving him. The long-term outlook at first base doesn’t look any better next season, and if he’s able to be anything close to the hitter he’s been, that’s a player you’d like to hang on to.

The hilarious season of Casey Lawrence continued this week, with the veteran right hander ascending to unseen heights after his turbulent year of bouncing around the baseball landscape. Tossing a complete game and allowing just one run on two hits, Lawrence was lights out all night and led the Rainiers to the W.

Arkansas Travelers

51-45

It was a series win for the Travs this week, securing the victory in an 8-4 contest on Sunday afternoon. Arkansas should be a rather formidable opponent for the Texas league down the stretch and figure to be in the heart of the playoff picture.

Brock Rodden is back! The utility man has spent a substantial amount of time on the IL this season, but he’s returned to the top of the Arkansas lineup and will be a mainstay there for the rest of the season. Rodden had tremendous numbers in his limited time prior to the injuries, however he’ll likely need a bit of time to get readjusted back to Double-A pitching after missing so much time. Rodden is a super interesting piece that’s got a rather high floor and could easily figure into the big league picture next year if they’re in a pinch for some infield depth, but he’ll have to first prove the bat plays well enough to get him there. Between the switch hitting, defensive utility, solid speed, and sneaky pop, having Rodden back in the lineup is sure to provide a major boost for the Arkansas lineup.

Tyler Cleveland recently got the promotion up to Arkansas after dominating in the Northwest League and is a name to know as a potential bullpen arm down the road. It’s a near submarine delivery with velo under 90 MPH more often than not, but it’s been hell on hitters as long as he’s been a pro. Keep an eye out for Cleveland as he finishes out the year. If nothing else, he’s interesting.

Everett AquaSox

49-47

The Frogs took the series against Spokane this week and are back above .500 on the year, however having already clinched a playoff spot thanks to their first half success, their record to close things out is far less important than it was earlier in the year. Get things rolling come playoff time and win the Northwest League, Frogs! I want to see Colt Emerson, Tai Peete, and Co. win their second championship in as many years!

Though much of the team has had a rough go of things, Colt Emerson has been on a tear as of late and looks every bit of one of the premiere prospects in the entire game. Collecting another nine hits this week with a homer and two doubles, Emerson is well on his way to getting a late season look with Arkansas and should be a lock to start next season with the Travelers. With his greatly improved defensive play this season, he’s turning into the complete package and could be an incredibly impactful player in the PNW for a very, very, long time.

Jurrangelo Cijntje logged his longest professional outing this week, going seven complete innings of two run ball. Cijntje relied heavily on the groundball in this one and though his K’s were a bit lower than usual, those quick groundballs enabled him to go as deep as he did and shows some growth in Cijntje’s game. Perhaps even more importantly, however, is the second straight start for Jurrangelo without a walk. Progress!

Modesto Nuts

53-43

The only affiliate not to win their series this week, the Nuts should theoretically be getting some reinforcements from the recent draft class, however when that comes and in what form is yet to be seen. As a viewer, I’d love to see it as soon as possible, but it wouldn’t shock me if there are some things the organization would like to hammer out in the young hitters before shipping them off to affiliate ball. Who knows? Maybe a handful of them skip right over Modesto and head to the PNW straight away.

Ryan Sloan may be the recipient of praise nearly every week at this rate, but this kid is just so damn good it’s impossible not to. Sloan, who owns an ERA of 3.36 after his latest start, went another four innings this week and allowed just one earned run. With another five K’s to add to his season total, Sloan has a K/BB ratio over five this season and won’t turn twenty years old until next January. The feel is advanced, the stuff is loud, the frame is durable, and the person is exceptional. Sloan has the looks of the next great Seattle pitching prospect, and you’d be hard pressed to find a prospect with his combination of upside and polish at his age. This is rare stuff.

For those curious on what’s up with Felnin Celesten, it’s been a bit of an odd season for the young super prospect. The power has seemingly vanished, however the bat to ball has remained solid and the defense continues to show quite well despite some early season errors. He’ll likely slip down prospect ranks due to his performance this season, however it wouldn’t be a major shock to see him rebound next season and return to his former self. He’ll get the bump to Everett next season and remains one of only a few prospects in this system with premiere upside.

ACL Mariners

The season wrapped up down on the complex league this week, with the M’s finishing two games back of the divisional lead despite having the best run differential. Season long stalwart Dustin Crenshaw earned a promotion up to Modesto where he’s taken quickly to his new spot.

DSL Mariners

Catcher Manuel Almeida has looked good so far this season and is a name to know on this DSL team. He doesn’t have the pedigree of some of his teammates, but he’s produced this season.

That wraps up this week’s round up. GOMS!!
