Gabriel Bonfim vs. Stephen Thompson squared off in a Welterweight contest earlier tonight (Sat. July 12, 2025) live on ESPN inside Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

The bout began with a trade of lead leg kicks from both men. Bonfim didn’t really rush the action, and neither man landed much for a couple minutes. Finally, the Brazilian exploded into a takedown attempt along the fence, quickly moving to the back mount. For a moment, it looked like the choke was locked in, but “Wonderboy” reversed

and landed a few punches! After a brief clinch, Thompson returned to his kicks at range. Bonfim landed a couple head shots before the bell, bringing a competitive round to a close.

The second round also began with quick trades of kicks that didn’t land particularly hard. Bonfim tried to return to the wrestling, but “Wonderboy” shut his shot down well. Bonfim landed a couple nice left hooks, which was clearly his best punch in this match up after a few exchanges. Thompson landed a good jab, then Bonfim timed another takedown along the fence. After an extended exchange, he wasn’t able to drag down Thompson. He did land a cracking right though then a counter left hook busted open the face. Thompson answered right back with a slick high kick that stunned Bonfim badly! Just as “Wonderboy” aimed to pour it on and force a finish, the round ended.

With five minutes remaining, the fight was still up for grabs.

Thompson’s shin was bleeding freely, but he kicked with power anyway! Bonfim tried hard for the early takedown to no success. “Wonderboy” denied another takedown and started pressing, sticking his opponent with kicks. Another high kick clipped the temple, but Bonfim wore it well. With about 90 seconds remaining, Bonfim finished a takedown along the fence and moved towards the back. Thompson scrambled hard back to his feet, refusing to settle in bottom position. The bout finished in the clinch, as Bonfim stayed clung tight to the Karateka.

After 15 back-and-forth minutes, the judges sided with Bonfim ... and I’m not sure it was the correct call. The stand up exchanges were rather competitive overall, so it doesn’t feel like a robbery. Still, Thompson’s late second round high kick should have swung that round back into his favor, and he definitely landed the harder, better shots in the final frame.

It’s tough to see a veteran like “Wonderboy” come up short after fighting for it so hard.

Result: Bonfim defeats Thompson via split-decision
