Athletics defeat the Angels 7-2

WHAT'S THE STORY?

A’s right fielder Colby Thomas reacts after hitting a two-run home run against the Los Angeles Angels during the first inning at Sutter Health Park.

Game two of the three game series between the Athletics and the Los Angeles Angels took place tonight at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.  Luis Morales matched up against Tyler Anderson for the Angels.

Morales struggled a bit in the first, loading the bases on two singles and a base on balls. But he escaped without giving up a run. Shea Langeliers led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. Two outs later, Colby Thomas followed with a monster homer to left giving the A’s a quick 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Luis Rengifo singled and stole second. Zack Neto singled to score Rengifo tightening the score to 2-1.

In the bottom of the third, the A’s loaded the bases on walks to Rooker, Kurtz and Soderstrom. Darell Hernaiz singled with two outs, scoring Rook and Kurtz. That padded the A’s lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Rooker led off with a solo bomb to left field. It was his 25th homer of the year and 71st RBI. At the end of five innings the score was 5-1 in favor of our A’s.

Justin Sterner replaced Morales in the top of the sixth. Morales final line for game 125 was five innings, one earned run on five hits and two walks. He struck out five and left in line for the victory.

Tyler Ferguson made his 40th relief appearance of the year in the top half of the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, Darell Hernaiz walked and took second on a wild pitch. After failing to drop down a clean bunt, Brett Harris singled, and drove in Hernaiz for the sixth A’s run. Max Schuemann walked, moving Harris to second with just one out. Langeliers flew out to right, advancing Harris to third. Rooker blooped a single to center to score Harris.

Sean Newcomb, who got the final two outs of the eighth inning, returned to pitch the ninth with a six-run lead. After two quick outs, he hit Teodosio with a pitch and then Neto singled. Teodosio scored on a single and a throwing error on Hernaiz. Newcomb got Mike Trout to ground out to end the rally, the inning, and the game. The final score was 7-2, giving the A’s their first series win over the Angles this year.
