Why AEW has yet to debut their already-made Women’s Tag titles

WHAT'S THE STORY?

AEW’s Twitter

When the topic of tag and trios titles for the AEW women’s division came up last year, the company’s owner, president and head of creative Tony Khan said they’d talked about the possibility but wanted to wait for the roster to be at full strength before doing so.

In May of this year, Khan called Women’s Tag titles “a goal for me”. About a month ago, a rumor hit saying that Women’s Tag belts were one of two new championships that were made about a year ago.

Now, in an interview with Wrestfriends’ Iridian

Fierro out today (July 30.) Khan confirmed the validity of that rumor...

“I have the belts. I made the belts. They exist.”

He’s once again concerned about the depth of AEW’s women’s roster, however:

“But I will put them into play when we are able to put the very best roster forward.”

The injury bug is again getting this blame, in particular All In Texas’ Women’s Casino Gauntlet, which resulted in Thunder Rosa, Mina Shirakawa, and the just-announced Syuri being sidelined:

“I have a bunch of people I would like to get involved in a women’s tag team tournament potentially. There has been so much injury in the women’s division and as the person who put together the women’s casino gauntlet, I wish that we had come out of it healthier. A quarter of the people in the match got knocked out of the match and out of action indefinitely.”

TK also reminded us that Jamie Hayter, who he called “one of the most important women in the division” is once again out.

“I do want to get the division healthy because if I tried to do it right now, I would be missing a lot of the people and I could do the tournament, but then I wouldn’t be able to have a healthy singles division at the same time.”
