After several twists and turns in the tale, rejected bids, and a slew of varying rumors over the course of the past couple of weeks, it finally looks like Bayern Munich is 100% going to be signing Luis Diaz from Liverpool. The deal is going to be worth around 75 to 80 million euros, which Liverpool is presumably going to use to invest into a potential transfer for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, who recently told Newcastle he wants to explore other options this summer away from Tyneside.
All things considered, Diaz was technically a backup option to Florian Wirtz, but Bayern also had contingency plans lined up in the event that a move for the Colombian winger also fell through. Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku, RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, and Lyon’s Malick Fofana were all players identified on Bayern’s backup option list, though Simons is now on the verge of completing a move to Chelsea.
Additionally, per information from Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg (@iMiaSanMia), Lyon’s Fofana was never really a concrete or serious option for Bayern. While it wasn’t 100% known that Bayern would wind up agreeing on a deal with Liverpool for Diaz, the Colombian was the sole focus of the club, especially after they had temporarily tabled their efforts to sign striker Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart.
As things stand, Fofana is a on the verge of a completing a move to Everton, though Lyon is currently asking for a higher bid than the one the Blues have already submitted. The Ligue 1 outfit has leverage in this situation because they are aware of the fact that different Champions League clubs have at least loosely been linked with wanting to sign Fofana. Thus, they can try to hold out to try to get more money from Everton.
Ironically enough, Bayern defender Adam Aznou will also be heading to Everton, as a deal worth up to 12 million euros was just agreed upon.
