Mariners trade for Eugenio Suárez, send Tyler Locklear and prospects to Diamondbacks

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Approximately four hours ago, I said “I just don’t think the Mariners are going to trade for [Eugenio Suárez]. I think the price is going to be too high until it’s too late. They’re going to say some crap after the deadline about how they pushed to the very end but just couldn’t quite pull off a deal.” For good measure, I also added later, “Watch, now that we’re recording, they’re going to make a trade and we’ll all look silly.”

Lo and behold, here we are. Looking silly.

I love silly.

And in the 13 minutes since I opened this doc...

Facts:

None. This is breaking news at the trade deadline. It’s all sources until the Mariners post that big cloudy teal scribble of a welcome photo. (But it’s Passan, confirmed by Daniel Kramer, which is as fact-y as you can get.)

Okay, there are actually two. 1) Suárez will be a free agent at the end of this season. 2) Suárez is rocking a 143 (I la, la, la love you) wRC+ and 3.1 fWAR as one of the best third basemen in Seattle. 3) The Diamondbacks just landed in Sacramento. That’s nice.

What we know from sources:

The Mariners are acquiring Eugenio Suárez from the Diamondbacks, pending medical review.

The return is Tyler Locklear, longtime 1B/DH farm system stalwart along with pitching prospects Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos, the latter two of whom are Top 20 in the Mariners’ system.

Opinions:

Personally, I am 98.7% HELL yes. The 1% is latent annoyance that they dealt him to save money and it would have been real great to have had him on this team all year. 0.3% is latent fear of good things, because I have loved the Mariners a long time. 6% of the 98.7% is also happiness for Locklear, who simply never seemed able to find a spot to stick it with the big league club in Seattle and who will definitely not have that problem in Arizona.

Now this is where you come in. Don’t be shy!
