The Virginia Tech Hokies don’t have a long series history with the Old Dominion Monarchs, but it’s certainly memorable. The two in-state teams were scheduled to face one another every year through the 2031 college football season. Due to some changes agreed to by both universities, four games are being canceled.
The Hokies will host ODU in 2025, on Sept. 13, at Lane Stadium. While this year’s game is not impacted, a home game against the Monarchs in 2028 is canceled, as well as three games in Norfolk:
2027, 2029 and 2031. The two teams will still meet in 2026 in Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock released the following statement:
“As we continue to evaluate and align our future non-conference schedules with the evolving landscape of college football, we’ve made a strategic decision—mutually agreed upon by both programs—to alter the number of games in the series,” said Babcock. “We’re grateful for the competitive games we’ve shared and we appreciate the flexibility and partnership from Old Dominion as we work to adapt in this new environment.”

No Virginia Tech fan is upset about this. And that’s meant with no disrespect toward ODU. The Hokies should use this as an opportunity to attempt to schedule another SEC or Big Ten opponent. Not only is that where the money is, but it’s also a more compelling matchup, even if the Hokies are underdogs.
This series honestly went longer than it should have. Two of the more embarrassing losses in recent school history came in this series, especially that 2018 game in Norfolk. Looking back, that felt like the beginning of the end of the Justin Fuente era.
