It’s been a roller coaster of a series. The Yankees lost a miserable game on Monday night, a game that seemed to highlight all the flaws of the roster. They won a potentially-season defining game last night, one that still featured some of those flaws but included a certain amount of grit and taste of theatrics that you see in championship DVDs. Now we’ve got a rubber match with Toronto, and all eyes are on the $218 million dollar left hand of Max Fried.
Fried of course left his last start on July
12th with a blister, did not pitch in the All-Star Game, and has had his post-break first start pushed until what would have been his first eligible day off a hypothetical IL stint. Blisters alone don’t ring alarm bells, but with every win so important for the Yankees right now, a Fried that’s 100 percent vs. one that’s checking his thumb every third pitch is a pretty big difference.
Chris Bassitt goes for Toronto, and the Yankees have slapped him around a bit this season. It’ll be Bassitt’s third outing against New York, with a 5.56 ERA. He’s worked into the sixth inning in both previous starts, but that third time through penalty looms large for the veteran righthander.
Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice, the two heroes of yesterday’s win, sandwich Aaron Judge in his customary three-spot in today’s lineup. Judge himself is the DH, meaning Giancarlo Stanton and Paul Goldschmidt sit. Do take note that tonight’s game is on Amazon Prime.
