Good news on the scoreboard watching front, with the Padres and Reds currently both losing their games. However, the Giants are up in their contest. Mind you, last night’s loss felt all the more disappointing, coming in the first game of the series. Even if we win the next two, it still feels like “uphill baseball” is beginning to seem like the team needs climbing boots and an ice-axe. It feels weird to be so conflicted: for the long-term interests of the team, trading Eugenio Suarez, etc. is certainly

best. But, dammit, it’s been a while since we have had a hitter whose at-bats have been must-see television like this. If - or, as seems increasingly likely, when - we trade Geno, a bit of joy will be gone from the 2025 D-backs.

Figure I should do a quick injury round-up, and see where everyone stands.

  • Shelby Miller threw to live hitters for a bit today, but felt some back tightness, so they cut it short and will see how he feels tomorrow.
  • Gabriel Moreno still isn’t cleared to resume full baseball activities. He’s able to receive pitches - presumably keeping his right hand carefully out of the way. But the fractured index finger is not fully healed, and is still likely a couple of weeks from being able to resume baseball activity.
  • Pavin Smith and Ildemaro Vargas have both begun taking dry swings
  • Jalen Beeks threw a bullpen session on Saturday, and then 31 pitches today. He’ll face live hitters on Friday.
  • Ryan Thompson is throwing from 60 feet.

Doesn’t really sound that many of them will be back immediately. I’d say Beeks might be the closest to returning.
