WWE unceremoniously splits former Tag Team champs

WHAT'S THE STORY?

It’s not at all surprising that A-Town Down Under broke up, the tag team of Grayson Waller & Austin Theory that formed in late 2023 and last year held the WWE Tag titles for three months after winning them at WrestleMania 40. Most modern pro wrestling tag teams are a vehicle to an eventual singles feud, and you had to figure the company would take another stab at making the 27-year-old Theory into a singles star before too long (no disrespect to Waller, who’s a very effective mid-card heel — but

at 35 has likely peaked with that role).

But it was surprising how A-Town Down Under broke up. After a few months with almost no role on television outside of Main Event matches, Waller showed up on Raw last night (July 21). It was in a backstage scene just after the LWO defeated The New Day & The Creeds to become #1 contenders for the World Tag titles, the Aussie pitched himself to Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods as the “ace” they need to get back on top.

It seems “Big G” is currently unaffiliated because Theory “is A-Town Down” as the “idiot went and got himself injured”. With “240 pounds of dead weight” off his back, Waller is looking for his next squad.

Ya boys don’t seem to excited about doing an MJF/Hurt Syndicate thing with Grayson, so we’ll see where that leads. But Waller continued to run down his now-former partner on social media — including this message to “all five” of Theory’s fans about how Big G saved Austin’s career after Cena “buried” him in their WrestleMania 39 program:

Which leads us to believe that a Theory/Waller feud is still a possibility. Probably not a high priority given the way the break-up occurred, but at least its on the table.

As for what’s up with Theory? He last wrestled at the Mon., July 14 Main Event taping, losing to Ludwig Kaiser-as-Grande Americano. We haven’t heard any reports of his being hurt in that match or since, but we’ll pass along whatever we do hear about his status.

Thoughts on the end of the former Tag champs’ time as a team?
