Liverpool’s wild transfer window continues apace with the club in for Newcastle’s star striker Alexander Isak. As multiple reports broke on Friday, Liverpool’s ultimate success in landing the want-away goalscorer hinge on Newcastle’s ability to line-up a replacement. Reports out of Tyneside indicated that the player the club want most to fill the gap left by Isak is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
At the time, Sesko had been mooted as a target for a few teams, most notably Manchester United - though
he’d been mentioned as a possibility for Arsenal before the Gunners moved forward with signing Isak’s countryman, Viktor Gyokeres. Newcastle’s main rivals in their pursuit of Sesko, then, were the Red Devils.
It looks, though, that Newcastle’s pursuit of Sesko has received a big boost as local reports out of Slovenia indicate that the striker only wants to play for Eddie Howe’s charges. Liverpool’s own hopes for landing Isak, then, have received a boost as well, given the aforementioned arrangement. Which is, really, good news all around.
It’s likely going to take a few weeks for this deal to materialize - if it does - given the complicated piece of Newcastle wanting to line-up their replacement before the Isak money is transferred their way. Not that it matters a ton; everyone knows the why of their pursuit of an attacker at this moment. But it definitely doesn’t hurt to be able to stand firmly on truth when negotiating and not have to contend with the prospective windfall as part of the discussion.
So, Liverpool fans will have to continue to wait and see. But at least we know that Sesko wants Newcastle and, if Isak really only wants Liverpool, then we’re getting much closer to the bonkers reality of Liverpool likely landing the two most in-demand strikers in the same window that includes them beating Bayern Munich for Germany’s next big star. Heady days to be a Liverpool fan.
